Project 1 - Oil Pastel Greeting Card

We’re going to draw a beautiful floral bouquet - don’t worry if you’ve never used oil pastels before. A few tips to begin with:

Wash your hands after using them and avoid touching your face. Keep them out of reach of children, as they can be messy and may contain ingredients that aren’t safe for ingestion. Work on a protected surface to prevent staining. Most importantly, have fun and experiment with blending techniques to create vibrant, layered colours!

Holding Oil Pastels – You can hold oil pastels like a pencil for precise details and controlled lines or grip them on their side to create broad, expressive strokes.

Layering & Blending – Start with light colours and build up to darker shades. Use your fingers or a cotton swab to blend smoothly.

Pressure Control – Apply light pressure for soft, translucent layers and heavier pressure for bold, opaque strokes.

Sgraffito Technique – Layer two or more colours and then scratch the top layer with a toothpick or palette knife to reveal the color beneath. This adds texture and detail.
