Free Lettering Practice Sheets - focusing on letter shapes

Practise sheet for hand lettering

I love teaching calligraphy and introducing more people to this relaxing skill. I’ve now been teaching my beginner workshops for a while and I’ve noticed a few very common mistakes almost every letterer makes when they first start. It’s natural and is part of the learning process, but I want to help you to master this skill efficiently.

3 Tips To Remember:

1. Calligraphy is different from handwriting, you want to think of letters as shapes. Adopting this mindset might take a while, but I’m here to help with these free practice sheets.

2. Take your time - don’t rush the process. Start slowly, and ignore the sped up lettering videos you see on social media. It’s a mindful and relaxing process, try to slow down your current pace and notice if your lettering improves.

3. Practice! Your strokes might be looking shaky, your pressure change points might be uneven and you’re just not sure whether you should continue. Here’s the thing, nobody is good at doing something new right away. It takes practice, consistency and willingness to learn. Don’t give up. Practice the basics (drills and alphabet) to build strong foundations before you start joining the letters up into words.

I’ve designed some fun Autumn themed worksheets for you to help with this practice.
They focus on deconstructing words into shapes, reminding you to separate letters into strokes, lift up your pen frequently and take it slowly.

You can print these as many times as you like for personal use.

Tools:
I recommend using a fine tip brush pen, such as Tombow Fudenosuke or Pentel Sign Brush or a calligraphy nib for these exercises.
Make sure you print these on smooth paper, which is suitable for lettering (for example, HP colourchoice).
