Leaf Lettering Project Step By Step

Modern calligraphy place card ideas

I really wanted to do this post as a little reminder that LETTERING CAN BE DONE ON ALMOST ANYTHING! Back in summer I had a similar project to this - to letter place settings on leaves to add a botanical feel to the weeding table decor. I learned a lot when doing it, but I wanted to experiment a bit further. I've always used faux leaves and I wanted to try and use acrylic pens on some real greenery.

My honeysuckle bush needed a bit of a tidy up so I took a few leaves from it for this little project.

These leaves are just perfect for lettering - they're smooth and sturdy. Those are the qualities you want to look for when sourcing yours. They want to be fresh and green - brown and crusty leaves won't work for this.

I really wanted them to have a gold dip effect, but I haven't come across a shiny opaque paint that would cover the leaf completely. I did have this Pen Touch Gold Pen and I know that it's very opaque when used for lettering so I just used it to colour the tip of the leaf to make it look like it's dipped.

Gold-dipped leaves

I also tried this pen to letter on the leaf and it worked well, but it wasn't very contrasting. Same goes for a black pen - it didn't really contrast with green very well.

I had two of these bright Posca pens I had laying around - and oh my goodness, orange and pink just look amazing on green. I can see how these could be used for Summer / Autumn weddings. They're so effective.

Lettering with Posca pens

I used a 5M size Posca pen for lettering and I think a size 3M would've worked very well too, if not better .

I just used single stroke stylised lettering and I think it worked very well - just one layer of some lovely, flowing style lettering. The trick is to make it bouncy and look gliding. I usually go fairly fast when doing this style, and don't pick up my pen from the paper as much as I normally would when using a brush pen or dip pen.

The results were lovely and I’m sure I’ll be doing this more now that I’ve found the tools that work well.

The downside with fresh leaves is that they won’t last long and will probably curl up a bit soon. But if they’re made just in time for the event they’ll look just stunning!
