Nikko G vs Blue Pumpkin Nibs: What’s the Difference?
When it comes to calligraphy, the choice of nib can make a huge difference in how your writing flows. Two of the most popular nibs are the Nikko G and the Blue Pumpkin (Brause Steno 361). While both have their fans, they cater to slightly different needs and styles. So, how do they compare? Let’s dive in.

The level of flexibility in a nib affects how easily it creates line variation.
Nikko G: This nib is semi-flexible, meaning it requires a bit of pressure to produce thick downstrokes. Its stiffness makes it easier to control, especially for beginners.
Blue Pumpkin: True to its name, the Blue Pumpkin is highly flexible. It produces dramatic line variation with minimal pressure, making it perfect for flourishes. However, its flexibility can make it a little tricky for beginners to manage.
Shape and Tip
Nikko G: With a pointed shape and slightly stiffer tip, the Nikko G is ideal for creating clean, precise lines. It’s a favourite for modern calligraphy and detailed work.
Blue Pumpkin: This nib is broader with a distinctive pumpkin-like shape. It also has a slightly rounded tip, which allows it to hold more ink - perfect for long, flowing strokes.
Ink Flow
Nikko G: Its ink capacity is moderate, so you’ll need to dip it into ink a bit more often. However, it’s incredibly consistent and avoids sudden blobs of ink (still happens, but to as often).
Blue Pumpkin: Thanks to its larger surface, the Blue Pumpkin can hold more ink. While this is convenient for lengthy strokes, it can sometimes release too much ink at once if you’re not careful.
I’ve also found that the Brause Blue Pumpkin nib doesn’t always work well with certain inks, especially pigment-based ones. It’s always worth testing, but once you find the right ink, the flow is beautifully smooth. My customers have mentioned that my Moss and Sage inks pair wonderfully with this nib.

Ease of Use
Nikko G: This nib is often recommended for beginners. Its stiffness provides more control, making it forgiving for those who are still mastering pressure techniques.
Blue Pumpkin: The Blue Pumpkin is better suited to experienced calligraphers. Its high flexibility demands a steadier hand, as uneven pressure can lead to ink blots or inconsistent lines.

Nikko G: It offers moderate line variation, making it a great choice for modern calligraphy styles that emphasise subtlety.
Blue Pumpkin: This nib shines when it comes to bold, dramatic line variation, making it perfect for traditional scripts like Copperplate and Spencerian.
Durability
Nikko G: Known for its durability, the Nikko G wears out slower and can handle more pressure without becoming damaged.
Blue Pumpkin: Due to its softer, more flexible nature, the Blue Pumpkin is less durable. It may wear out faster, especially if you press down too hard.

In conclusion, both the Nikko G and Blue Pumpkin are excellent nibs, but they excel in different areas. The Nikko G is a reliable all-rounder, perfect for starting out or creating detailed, clean lines. On the other hand, the Blue Pumpkin’s flexibility and dramatic line variation make it a favourite for expressive and artistic styles.
